Undeniably, still the best way to get a lot of readers is by providing good content and keeping it on the light side if you plan on entertaining them. Most blogs nowadays are geared toward a specific topic which I think is ingenious as you do not have to hope for the sky but just those you have similar interests with.

Also in that way, you can get a lot of advertisers when you already have an establish fab base.

1)Your Blog must have unique content.
2)Submit your blog to search engines.
3)Syndicate your blog's content with an RSS feed.
4)Tag your posts.
5)Submit your post to social bookmarking sites.

Yes all these tips are good ..I would like to add one thing though, promoting your blog through social media sites is the most important step according to me.
